wont start....Help! was created by grl06
Ok here is the deal. I have an 81 kz 1100 shaftie that wont start. I thought it was the battery so I pulled it and charged it until it was full, put it back in and still nothing. I get power when I turn the key on and when I go to start it the ignition noise happens but the engine does not turn over. We even tried to jump start it. Then we tried to push start it and the engine was turning over (because of the pushing) but when I went to rev it nothing.
It is like I am trying to start it with zero gas in it, but it has a full tank. Could the spark plugs be bad?
ANY INFO really helps, thanks!

You might try new plugs cause there cheap. This happened with my z1 once, 4 new plugs solved it right up. U might even try spraing a very very small amout of starting fluid in the airbox to se if it will fire.

How can the bike make an "ignition noise" and not turn over. The sound of the engine turning over is what makes the noise. Do you mean it isn't firing or not turning over?

If the starter is running but the engine is not turning over, your starter clutch is probably not engaging. If the engine is turning over but no start, did you prime your carbs? Are you getting a spark? chris3

Well I just pulled my plugs and their black. I know that means I am running rich but they should still work right? I might spend the cash and replace em just for giggles. I was thinking its the starter clutch but I don't want to believe it because its going to cost a bunch to fix haha.

correct me if I am wrong, but if I tried to push start her, and I know how too because I have done it a million times, wouldn't the starter clutch not be needed the engine is turning over because I am forcing it too with the push but it doesnt catch it just turns over and when I stop it stops.

You didn't fix the problem. The starter clutch is the problem. The bike will turn over but won't start if the plugs are fouled. Not sure what it takes to fix the starter clutch on an 1100. You might want to measure coil voltages... read the tech article on our website under wg's Tech Stuff Index called Coil Repowering. Have you adjusted the valves, ever?

I don't know if you saw my last post but I replaced the spark plugs and she started right up, now that I think about it the plugs are really old. I believe this has nothing to do with the starter clutch because it starts properly now and without any form of hesitation.

why is EVERY issue w/ the bike starting automatically lead to the starter clutch w/ you all? just because it may be a fault or easily worn out part, doesnt mean it is on his bike.

Your post lead me to believe your starter was turning but the engine was not turning over. chris3
