I've been looking for engine parts for my 82 kz 1000 csr and a lot of it is for 80 and before. Is there less desirable about bikes 80 and latter.

In 1981 they went to the new design KZ1000J engine which was much faster and lighter, however not near the durability of the pre 1981.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I am having some trouble locating parts for my bike also. Its a 1982 1100 Spectre. From what i understand, there were only about 1500 of the bikes produced in 1982 and carries the same engine as the GPZ. I often wonder why they made so few. I think they are nice bikes. I trouble finding OEM parts for mine. Bike Bandit does not even list my bike so I rely alot on ebay. Right now I am having trouble finding a shifter seal. I have an annoying little leak that is driving me nuts.

The shift seal will be the same part as on any other 1100. I would get the part number from kawasaki.com parts diagrams and plug it into one of the OEM parts search engines. I bet they carry it. You could also try using another OEM parts seller as bikebandit.com uses their own proprietary parts numbering and not the OEM part number which makes them fairly confusing. I typically buy from www.z1enterprises.com and let them find the OEM part. They have access to anything bikebandit.com might.

As to why so few CSRs were made? Well by 1982, the other manufacturers had more or less caught up with Kaw and more or less passed them. The GS1100 was considered a better performer and nicer looking, the XS1100 was considered a better all around bike with higher quality and I am sure Honda must have had something to rival the CSR. The CSR was an early Japanese attempt at a cruiser and was not all that well received nor were many of the other Japanese attempts from other manufacturers. Also, Kaw had a number of different KZ1000 and KZ1100 models and some were much better sellers. They didn't make all that many as they were not moving off the sales floor. In another year or two, there was a glut of bikes with 2 and 3 year old leftovers gathering dust as the bike industry took a nose dive starting in 1983 as I recall.

Most parts, and all engine parts, on a KZ1100 will fit the Spectre. I have two Spectres and one KZ1100A2. The only difference in parts is the A2 part will be unpainted/chromed, where the Spectre part is black. I have been riding/working on these 4 cylinder bikes since the first Z1 came out so I can usually tell which parts will fit from year to year......The Kawasaki IPC is a big help too. It lets you compare part numbers to see if it will work or not....chris3
