Camshaft bearing wear
22 Jun 2008 16:01
I assume these are toast. Probably a third of the bearings out of the KZP engine I'm rebuilding have this color change from silver to gold seen here, and the texture changes from smooth to rough.
The camshaft appears fine, though I've not yet made any measurements, so it could worn out of spec.
Is this type of wear typical for a cam bearing, and what does that tell me about the camshaft?

How many miles on the engine?
The wear looks fairly typical for a moderate mileage engine - 20K or more.

Replace? Not a problem to. I've been working up a huge order for Z1 over the last few weeks as I go through the engine. As long as the camshafts themselves are okay, I'm happy.

Sometimes that is oil stain. Wipe then with a piece of fine Scotchbrite and see how they look.

Plastigage will tell you the wear. At 40k, I'd probably replace them anyway since it's easy to do.

Those cam bearings are probably just fine. Put them in the parts washer and go lightly with some used 600 paper.
They'll probably clean right up. There may still be some light scouring marks in the bearings but it won't hurt a thing.
You'd be amazed at some of the cam bearings I've seen in heads that come through my shop and the guys will run them without any troubles.
I know..it sounds crazy and if you want to replace them, that's all well and fine BUT, rest assured that is not an uncommon situation and I've seen many of them touched up and reused......

Thanks to all for the advice....
I think cleaning them up and re-using is the way to go, if possible. If needed I can replace them later since they're not especially hard to get to. At least not as hard as a transmission bearing, for example. Also a complete set is $100+. This money is probably better spent on something deeper in the engine. Like transmission bearings.
I'll have at with some Scotchbrite/600 grit/parts cleaner and try to clean them up.

Wont cam bearings with a lot of wear cause your oil pressure to drop after the engine is warmed up? Oil pressure isnt a big thing so much as oil flow of course, but if your bike has a lot of miles and low oil pressure too wouldnt it be best to replace the cam bearings? (if you monitor the pressures,temps,.. and so on)
