pistons worth fixing? was created by bizzyrider
I bought a 96 kz 1000 a few months back and just discovered it needs to be bored along with piston replacement. The shop wants to charge 1000 + or -. Am I getting soaked? I just want to check before giving them the green light.

Is it going to include having the head done?Wouldn't make sense not to lap the valves and replace the seals at the same time.

If that $1k price includes all new pistons and rings, labor to remove and rebuild, it's not really out of line. The machine shop that bored my cylinder charged $75 per hole just to do the boring (carry in)which would be $300 for a quad. You can figure new piston/ring sets are probably $75 each or more unless you get lucky on ebay. You need top end gasket set so it's at least another $150 or more. Figure +$700 for parts and machine shop cost just to get off the ground. Doing all the labor for maybe $300 is reasonable. I wouldn't do it for that.

Check out APE's prices for comparison.

Bore and hone (you provide pistons) $189
Bore and hone with purchase of pistons $120
Wiseco 1075 piston kit $466.61

That's $586.61 plus shipping both ways for your block (around $25) for a complete cylinder block ready to bolt on.

Figure 5 hours or so for labor (at $70 per hour?) $350

That's $961.61 (plus tax?).

Add in the $80 or so for a gasket set.

Anyone can bore a cylinder (even me), it's the honing that separates the winners from the losers, and APE's honing procedures are proprietary, I've been bugging Jay for a couple of years trying to get him to tell me his secret honing process with no luck :D

I'm determined to do everything myself on my KZ750E project, but unfortunately I have to pay someone to do the TIG welding, and because I want the very best ring seal on the 810, I guess I'm going to bite the bullet and pay Jay to do the bore and hone on it. :(

Why do the cylinders need to be bored? Did you measure the piston to bore clearance? Is there damage to the liners?
