I just recently replaced all the valve shims on my 78 KZ1000,stock motor, 36,XXXkm. I re tested the clearances. they all are equal to 0.003th/inch/0.76mm. Is that too tight? according to the book that is dead even. However, I have been told it should be between 0.004-0.005th in

Original shims in the bike
Intake
1 2.35 mm
2 2.70
3 2.55
4 2.50

Exhaust original
1 2.65
2 2.70
3 2.60
4 2.60

What new shims I used
Intake
1 2.45
2 2.65
3 2.50
4 2.45

Exhaust
1 2.65
2 2.65
3 2.55
4 2.60

I did a compression test and my numbers read
1 120lbs up from 100
2 100 from 85
3 100
4 110 from 95

It is easier to say what I haven't replaced then what I have.

I don't let em go under 4 thou 3 seems a bit close make sure you turn the motor over a few times and check again, never go on the first measurement especially if you've had the cams out.
Compression still seems a bit low even for a cold engine.

If the book says it's good, it probably is. If you are having a hard time swallowing the compression figures, try a wet compression test to try and determine if there is an issue with the rings or something similar.

I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

.003 seems a little tight. I just did mine and went with .004 to .006. .006 as the max. Get them as close to .004 as possible. I think it's better too loose (.005-.006) than too tight.

The spec on my 750 twin is .002" - .004". I keep them in the .003" - .005" range. A shade to wide won't hurt much, a shade too narrow can destroy your head.

Those compression numbers are BAD news. Squirt oil in the cylinders and recheck. If they pop up a good bit, it means the rings are hosed. If they don't come up much, then the valves are toast.

Sounds like group opinion is to allow more gap. I will drop down to the next shim size and see
