Hey this topic has been touched upon but not to the degree that would help me.

I am looking for options for oil cooling. I have an 81 kz1100 shaftie and I am in Tallahassee Florida where it gets 95 degrees easy throughout the day and I am looking to run her a as cool as I can. Ebay is a good resource but I don't have the means to buy an oldschool aftermarket Kerker or Lockhart oil cooler for 200$-250$ can I put on some kz 750 oil coolers, or perhaps some gpz coolers? Or does anyone have any other success stories in this field, or can just point me in the right directions? Any tidbit of info helps, thanks!

I put a cooler from (if I remember right) an '84 GPz1100 onto my '82 KZ1000 CSR. I bought the cooler off ebay for about $20, and then bought the hose fittings/oil switch in a separate auction for $15.

I ran into a few snags along the way. The first was trying to figure out where to move the horn so that I could mount the cooler. I eventually found a place to mount it.

The next problem was that with the hoses running over the top of the engine and down between the carb intake boots, they interfered with the movement of the throttle on the carbs. The bike that the cooler came from had fuel injection, so this wasn't a problem.

I was able to fix this by using stainless steel cable ties running through some holes in the cyl head to pull and hold the hoses close to the head so that they did not block the movement of the throttle.

Here's a link to an auction for the same kind of cooler I bought.

You will still need to find the fittings for attaching the hoses to the engine.

Good luck!

In the 70's Ford used to make a finned power steering fluid cooler that you might be able to pick up at a junk yard. not quite as big as a Lockhart but will help a lot

I did about the same thing as skyman. I think mine came from an 82 GPZ 1000. I guess I got lucky because I got all the fittings and hoses with mine in the same auction. I also used the stainless safety tie wire they use on aircraft to pull the hoses in to the cylinder/head or else there are throttle issues. If you look closely you can see the tie wire right above the hose fitting and below the manifold.

Heres what I did to mount my horns. One on each side.
