I have an 84 KZ700. In first gear and sometimes 2nd the engine revs to 9500 w/ no problem. When I'm in 3rd and 4th (not brave enough to run it flat out in 5th) and I get around 7 grand I start to get a miss or hesitation or some kind of lag. I've changed the plugs, only run 93 octane, and done the regular maintenance on the bike since I got it (2 mos ago). Any ideas on what this might be?

;) Try 89 octane. There is a thread lying around somewhere arguing about the best gas to use. I think the consensus was 89. I know my bike starts to pop and lag with anything other than 89. Try that and see if it helps.

I know it would not be any fun if it was easy, but does it have to be this much fun?

Use 87 octane on your LOW compression bike. what airbox/air filter is installed? Do you use an inline fuel filter?

I have a new OEM air filter & a clean in-line fuel filter. I've never thought a lower octane gas, but this is all new to me & I'll give it a shot.

Not to be negative, but while you should switch to 87 octane, it will likely not help with this problem. If you are using the stock airbox and a new in line gas filter, the problem is likely not carburetor related. More likely ignition as in ignition coils or wires. Under heavier load, these bits tend to misbehave. Weak spark due to low coil voltages might potentially cause the bike to not pull in top gear. Provide some history on the coils and ignition wires and let us know what voltage you are getting at the coils with the key turned on. Do you have any charging problems?

The fuel filter put on by previous owner was too small. I changed it to a larger one & BOOM!! It feels like I woke up 15 horses....amazing!
