Am I screwed? was created by ericvm
Ok...so I was feeling proud about my first top end re-build when I discovered a couple peices I failed to install. They are the pins in the oil passage between the cylinder block and head. I did put the o-rings in though. Will I get oil up to the top without these? Can I count on a massive oil leak all over the fins? What kind of trouble am I in?

If you don't remove the head and install those oil restrictors you stand a good chance of wiping out the bottom end.

Yep, and the reason is: if that's like my bike, that "flow pin" is also a flow restrictor (orifice). In other words, it has a small restrictive hole in it. That raises back pressure againt oil flow coming off the pump from down below. Without restricting it, the system oil pressure will drop and oil won't be flowing to all the other places like it normally should. That starves oil to critical places like main bearings and such.

BTW: I think the 92043 is just an alignment pin.

Thanks. I've now removed the head and am waiting on a new $37 head gasket. Damn.

Was it a new head gasket for the rebuild that has not been run (just torqued down?)

If so, I'd use that sucker again. It will need re torquing anyway after the first run. Worked on mine.

during assembly I used gasket sealant around the two outer crankcase bolts on each side ...just like the manual said to

When I took the head off again, the gasket tore apart where the sealant was used.

Double bummer. But, at least you didn't run it and mess up the engine and you learned a lesson. That's not as bad as the train wreck when I did my rebuild: the new cylinder base gasket disintegrated in about 100 miles and I had to tear it all the way down to the rods and do it all over.

was there something wrong with your base gasket? Why did it disintegrate?
