OK
In the old days they used to weld a crank with a bent rod.
(stick welding) You can weld, so weld it if you like.
You do not add that much steel at the weld points to through
a crank out of balance. You are only adding a 1/2 to 3/4 inch long
X1/4 wide weld to the crank center not on the out side edge.
It's not going to through the crank out that much.
Find a markII crank and go..... It's a much better then a Z1 crank.
If you can't find one, PM me I think I know were there is one setting.

sully73:
Yes you will need a new cam chain for a 16 tooth crank sprocket,
Regardless, if you change the crank you should change the chain.
Cost??? Do /will you need the stater magnet? I will ask a friend I think he has one.
A (guess) $250 unknown if welded or not. I have no idea what is a good price.
I haven't needed one in 10 years. (Ebay) maybe Im sure he is going to say
how much are you willing to pay. Or how bad do you need it.
We all know how it all works. Please take no offense.
Best I can tell you on cost is see what some of the other posters here say.

There is no way to cheeply put a MKII crank in a J engine. You will have to find a J crank to replace yours.

I think APE's kzzone.com has pics of the welds on a crank. There is a J crank on ebay right now. I also have a local dragrace guy that had a J motor he wanted to sell me for $200 last summer. I can check with him and see if he still has it. If you want we can go halves on it. I just wanted the head and you can have the rest. PM me.

tig,heli-arc same deal. This process was perfected in 1941, and became known as heliarc or tungsten inert gas welding, because it utilized a tungsten electrode and helium as a shielding gas.
you will be fine with a stock crank unwelded, for what you want.so get the best deal you can and keep moving. my.02
