Sudden loss of power KZ1000Police 1980 was created by Bullitt03737
The bike is all stock. Carbs were professionally done. I know those are correct. But I can start it fine and ride it for about 25 minutes, then all the sudden its like hitting a wall. It can barely carry its own weight. I figured out it has one bad coil. Now my question is could this coil be fine while cold, but after riding the engine heats it up cuasing it to short out or what not? Or is there something bigger going on here?

Thank you
Ian

Bad coils typically do get flaky after they heat up. That's exactly what my coil did when it was going bad.

Im going to go ahead and dig this back up.

Still having the same problem. Its been parked for months and it fired right back up suprisingly. But It still has the same old problem. The 2/3 coil just stops working all together once it warms up I guess. I know for a fact the coil stops working.

The thing I have been wondering for a while now is there anything else that would effect just one of the coils once it got hot too? I would hate to think that a brand new dyna coil went bad that quickly. Im just trying to elimnate other sources of the problem before I guy another coil

Here's an easy test. Swap coils. If the problem then moves to the 1&4 cylinders it MUST be the coil because that's the only thing that moved. Ed

I'd do this: remove the tank, take a hair dryer and run it over the coils on high to simulate the hot working conditions the coils live in and then check with a multimeter set on ohms and see how they test.

If the resistance varies or shows less than 3 ohms I'd be suspicious of the coil(s). Check the secondary side too(I'm not sure what the reading will be).

That sounds like an awful lot of work to swap them coils, but It has to be done.

Im going to guess that everything else involved in the ignition is tied to both coils?

I would swap the coils also. Then I would check the plugs and make sure the gap is correct and not fouled....Russ

It will run perfectly fine for the first 15-20 minutes. And its not an intermitant failure, its all the sudden and stays that away until it cools back down.

Have the coil windings been ohm checked while the coil is still warm?

Good Luck! :)

What ignition is fitted? Oem Kaw electronic, or Dyna-S, or ???

Just wild guessing, but thinking possibility of heat-related faiure in igniter, or right-hand-side oem pick-up coil or Dyna-S module.

Good Luck! :)

Could also be a heat-related spark plug failure on either inside plug. Have new NGKB8ES plugs been installed in inside cylinders?

Good Luck! :)
