Z1 & KZ900 heads will fit all 1972-1980 900/1000 engines - only the exhaust studs are 6mm instead of 8mm found on the KZ1000

77 & 78 heads are vry similar to the Z1 / KZ900 heads - essentially just the studs are different.

In the USA the 79 & 80 heads have emission ports. The 1980 EFI model head has other differences due to different bolt spacing on the intake manifolds and the injector ports in the head. For the rest of the world the 79 & 80 heads are the same as the 77 & 78 heads.

1981 and up are different and have a different cam chain arrangement

yes they are the same years, 79/ 80. im not sure if there is any benefit in swopping the heads, the 1980 motor, has some problems, but i had the valves done 8 mths ago. and thats why the question, there is nothing wrong with the heads on the 1979, motor. just trying to get the best from both motor? and if you know were i could get a 79/80 engine repair manual that would also help

Not all of them are MKII.

Early 79 LTD1000 had the old small pin crank motors and 122 pin cam chains. The factory was trying to use up the old parts.

However, the heads are the same. Both pollution port heads.

This topic is fitting my question on hand this morning. I just bought a 79 kz1000 and am trying if figure out exactly what it is. I believe it to be a LTD. I t does have electronic ingnition (no points) so does that mean it is a MKII motor? Only the small crank pin motor had points right?

Is there any other tell tail that defines the differance between MKII and small pin motor?

When in doubt upshift
