Kick start help

Hi, I just got a '78 kz650 from a guy who had it sitting around for a decade or so and I just got it running today, I use the kickstart to start it and when it's running the kickstarter gets rotated all the way down and when I try to move it back up it just ratchets and goes back down when I let go, anyone have any ideas?
