OK, I have a potentially stupid question..How do you remove the mechanical advance on an '82 550? Its been a few months since I last tried, but I successfully removed every bolt in the vicinity, and nothing would budge even the slightest bit by hand or with careful prying..Is a gear puller needed? I'm wanting to yank mine to clean it up.

Bump..played with it today, nothing will budge even the tiniest little bit..I see people talking about removing the advancer to clean it, but no one ever goes into HOW to remove it..

Should be a 13mm (I think) bolt on the end of the crank with a 17mm nut behind it. Remove the 13mm bolt and the 17mm nut pulls off (or falls off), remove the points/pickups plate (two or three screws, and the advancer should come right off.

Thanks..I removed all of that, the advancer wont budge at all, even when prying with a pry bar. It looks like I might be able to get a small gear puller on it..Guess I'll see about picking one up and trying that..

Here is a diagram from Kawasaki.com if it helps. Does it move at all? Such as just being stuck or maybe still bolted down? Not familier with the "newer" 550's but let us know. (remember to click on image for larger size)

it doesn't move at all, its absolutely frozen. The diagram is right, and with 92001 and 92022 completely off, its like its welded onto the crank. Prying with a pry-bar moves the crank a little bit, but doesn't budge the advancer.

You have removed that big round plate that the pickups are mounted on, right?

yep. Only thing left is the advancer.
Its pretty obvious the advancer is frozen, which would explain why the bike wont run worth a crap anymore. The springs are two chunks of rusted metal.

Could try soaking it with PBBlaster or Kroil for a day or so, keeping it wet, then try again. Could also rap the part smartly with a small hammer (not Godzilla force) which might help break it loose. Could also try heating it with a propane torch which might help break it loose.

Good Luck! :)

Thanks, the last time I tried to remove it, I kept it wet with PB blaster and tapped on it and pried on it for a few days to no avail..I may try the heat, but I'm thinking I'll get a small gear puller and put a little tension on it with that while I heat it..
