KZ550 oil light on .
08 May 2008 16:07
I have a KZ550 w/10,000 mis. that has been sitting . I put some Seafoam in the oil and gas . The cam chain was rattling so I figured that this might loosen the tens. wedges . After idling for about 10 min it did quiet down the noise . A few minutes after that the oil light started to come on if the revs were under about 1800 . I put about 6oz in the oil . Is it possible that the viscosity was thinned enough to cause this . I will start it again tomorrow and see if it lights up with cold/thick oil . Any thoughts or experience with this ???
Thanks

My guess is the oil has been thinned. I would change the oil and filter then try it again.

My oil light would come on when it was up to full operating temp at low rpm any time my oil was getting to be due for changing..I concur, change the oil and filter and see what happens..

The Seafoam may have caused the oil to foam up resulting in loss of oil circulation. A few years ago one of the members fried his KZ750 Spectre engine trying to ride into the mountains with too much Seafoam in the oil.

I am not a fan of putting addatives in the oil that are supposed to "clean" the engine.
If and when whatever you add to the oil breaks the sludge or what ever is in there down, it has only one place to go, the oil pump pick-up screen, it can and will clog the screen and cause engine damage

Good point. If you do a throgough cleaning at every change, it's probably OK. But if you only do it when it's loaded up, that could loosen a buch of sludge.I am not a fan of putting addatives in the oil that are supposed to "clean" the engine.

I got to run it in the garage for a while this afternoon . I let it run for about 10-15 min and the light didn't come back on . I'm going to do an oil change before I run it again. The cam chain is nice and quiet now .
