Replacing clutch cable
29 Apr 2008 19:06
Hey everyone,
I want to replace the frayed clutch cable on my GPz. I know how it attaches at the lever but how does it attach at the clutch? It disappears into the cases somewhere. My manual is not very helpful. Any tips or tricks to getting this done?

I pull my shift lever and left footpeg off.
Remove the cover off of the back half of the engine (4 screws or so) hey, the front sprocket!!
You should see the lever linkage that the other end of the clutch goes in to behind that casing. Pretty straight forward.

I didn't know how to either but once I pulled the case off I just looked at how it was installed and did the same with the new cable. It is a pain but one of those things that once you do it, it's not a big deal. Be sure to lube your new cable. Also, the little nut and threaded part in the middle is how you adjust the feel of the clutch on the lever.

The cover you need to remove is on the left side of the engine right below the carbs. You might have to remove the cover for the starter, two 10mm bolts. The hardest part of the job is reinstalling the little cotter key, yeah, I have fat fingers. Use the fitting in the middle of the cable to get your lever adjustment in the ball park then fine tune the pull at the lever. As said above, not hard once you do one. You should pick up a maintenance manual, they are less than 20 bucks.....chris3

Thanks everyone!
It sounds easy. I'll give it a try this weekend.
Oh, and Chris3 I do have a manual it does not have clear instructions on how to change the cable. It's along the lines of, "replace the cable".

Yhere is three adjustment points for the clutch cable. There is a set screw with a lock nut on the worm gear at the sprocket cover, the adjustment sleeve in the middle of the cable, and the adjustment at the cable end. after the new cable is installed and the sprocket cover in place, you will see a small square or rectangle shaped piece above the shifter. Remove the small cover (two screws). Turn the adjustment sleeve in the middle of the cable all the way IN (shorten the sleeve rather than extend) to give as much slack as possible. Loosen the lock nut on the set screw behind the small square cover and turn the set screw in until it bottoms on the clutch actuator rod. Loosen the screw 1/4 of a turn and tightn the lock nut. Next adjust thesleeve in the middle of theclutch cable until MOST of the play is out of the clutch lever. Use theadjustment system near the cluch lever to do your final adjustments. I alway just remember to start at the engine and work towards the clutch lever.
