Woomp there it is. I heard a lot about this guy. I was considering having him build my bike for me but he isn't cheap. I don't have the extra cash flow at the moment to drop 7 grand on the engine just yet. I talked to him on the phone. He knows his stuff for sure.

It's there you have to go to home and look at the site a little. Home then to the tab that says kz data.

Guys....all motors don't cost 7 grand. Those engine package prices with all the goodies that are available. They contain the one time through, put in all the good stuff approach. They're for the guy that's after a bike he's going to keep and wants to do the motor one time and be finished as opposed to risking component failure and possible throwing away the money already spent because something let go and trashed the motor.

It's always the owners call as to what they are willing to risk vs the budget vs their expectations. I point you to the good parts and make suggestions on what you need for the project.

What you have to remember is this. Certain components are so old that they're just not practical to re-use. Cam chain idlers, rollers, etc. for the most part are whipped when the motor's are torn down. Those are no cheap to replace anymore.

What a guy might toss in a dragbike is very different than what a guy should have in a street bike. I see drag racers run cam chain rollers that I'd toss in the trash in a heartbeat. They have a different agenda though. They're running 1/4 mile at a time and the hauling truck is never far away.....;) Entirely different story on the street.:)

Build a motor on a good foundation with good components...sure it costs money these days. On the other hand, do you want to drop a grand into a ported head and cams, then harness them to a questionable bottom end and worn out cam chain components?....

Making HP on a Kz or J motor is not that difficult when you know what the tricks are. Unfortunately serious power should be supplemented with a reliable bottom end [crank / trans / clutch].

Neither side of the engine is cheap to do [top end / bottom end].

What you spend on the bottomed end, isn't something that reall gives you that seat of the pants or time slip buzz you crave. That's all in the top end of the motor....However, there's a balance point of HP made from the top end components vs the breakage factor of the bottom end components....see that I mean?

I'm a big time stickler about details and having things "just right". With no control over the cost of the parts [and they ain't getting cheaper as time goes on] all I can do to help guys out is keep costs reasonable on the labor side of the coin. It takes time to tear down one of those motors and go through it properly, then reassemble it, degree the cams...etc.

The days of building a low cost KZ are long gone. But then again...price some cams for a ZX14, pipe & Power Commander....

Best Regards,

Larry C
