gpz exhaust stud size?????? was created by jordan
I have completed building my engine with a 1983 gpz 750 head. I am finishing up the last few minor details. I went to the hardware store and bought 8 studs. I knew the studs on my other 750 were 6mm so thats what I bought. When I got back into the shop I soon realized that the studs were too small. The next day I went back to the hardware store and bought an 8mm stud and a 10mm stud. The 8mm stud fit perfect. Is this the way it is supposed to be or did somebody drill out the old threads and tap them for 8mm? If they are right this would mean that the exhaust would have holes big enough for 8mm studs. If somebody did drill and tap the head i would have to find some 8mm to 6mm studs, and the ones at the hardware store aren't long enough. Any help, wisdom, or suggestions?

thats a good question! I am going to have to buy studs myself for an 82gpz. i'm glad you posted that because i was just about to buy some studs just assuming that they were the same size.

8mm and 6mm exhaust studs are available from Z1E.

As I recall, the threads on one end of the stud are cut slightly different (not quite standard) so as to more tightly fit when screwed into the head. So it is important to know which end is which. And probably won't find anything like this in a hardware store.

And be careful about any drilling or re-tapping or thread chasing inside the head, as it is easy to cut through into an oil channel on some of these bikes. In which case the oil will eventually work its way to the outside and make a mess on the fin area. :(

Just a reminder.

Good Luck! :)
