Firing Problems on a KZ750 was created by wrcarter
1981 Kawasaki kz 750 LTD.
Bike has not been on the road since 01,
I have cleaned the carbs, checked the compression and firing,
sync'ed the carbs.
I think the plugs are new, but I checked,
cleaned and set them anyway.
Cyl's 1 & 2 are firing weaker than 3 & 4, on the road,
the bike only sounds good between 4000 & 5500 rpm,
above or below that it is sputtering,
can't get it over 65 mph.
HELP I have done all that I can think of.

Cool, I've got the same bike. I like mine very much.

Sounds like you have done a lot of work to bike. For checking compression; did you use a gauge or finger over the hole? If a gauge, what were the reading across the board?

I would check the compression with a gauge and the valve clearances.

Stock exhaust?
Stock jetting in the carbs?
Stock air box or pods?
Will it idle?

Compression check was done with a gauge,
all four cylinders read basiclly the same
four compression strokes:
75
100
125
150

also, I was just out working on it, I checked the plug wires, and trimed the ends going into the coils for cyl's 1 & 3. The other two looked good.

After a test run (about 10 miles) all four cylinders are firing, but their doing it ugly.
Now cyl#2 is the hotest, cyl#1 is the coolest, the exhaust is 4 into 2 and the left pipe is running approx. 150 degrees cooler than the right pipe, it has a severe power loss up to 3500, at 4000 it takes off and is very strong to 5500, after that it just starts breaking down, and on the road will not reach 7000.
