Mac vs Vance and Hines
17 Apr 2008 20:25
i was obvusually under the wrong impression that mac and vance and hinew were the same in performence. I experamented on the z1. I put a 4 into 1 mac pipe and pods and it ran great up to 5000 rpm's, ran it for about a week. Then i put a 4 into 1 vance and hines and left the pods, now it runs great to redline. I didnt thing that a pipe could make all that difference. I think i might upgrade to a 4 into 1 kerker with the big fat refund check im getting back from uncle sam.

Kerker is one of the best out there but you will pay for it. They are expensive. I personally run V&H pipes. The chrome isn't as good a quality maybe but I have never had a problem with one. If you have the V&H already, why spend extra money? It is a personal choice obviously, but I thik you will like the V&H. But that's just my opinion. You won't be disappointed with a Kerker by any means. Lots of guys swear by them, even I would like to have one, but won't spend the money.

I have had a V&H and presently have a Kerker i cant tell any difference in performance.certainly not enuf to justify the price difference.you will also sacrifice some ground clearance with the Kerker.

MAC's are crap. I am running one right now. The Kerker clone I had before made more power and gave better gas mileage. It also blocked the oil drain plug completely and was loud enough to make my ears ring.....

The thing I don't like on most of the MAC pipes are their cheap and flimsy exhaust flange 'plates' permanently afixed to the header pipes. They bend too easily causing exhaust leaks and broken studs.

SO, if someone was looking for a V&H 4 into 1 for a 77 KZ 1000, where might he look to get the best price?

I like the v&h for its looks, price and performance, I haven't seen or heard of MAC here in OZ but I think the v&h pipe is designed better were the pipes rout to the collector. Most 4 into 1 pipes have 1 & 4 pipe to the top of the collector and 2 & 3 to the bottom, so if you draw 4 circles in a square and number them 1 - 4 as in cylinders they come from, them draw a line from 1-2-4-3 as in the firing sequence, the line crosses over itself. On the v&h the line goes in a circular motion and subsequently creating "swirl".
Any gun owner will tell u that if a bullet doesn't spin, it would not go far, so with swirl the gases should exit quicker, hence intake speed should increase.
