Broken, not worn out.
Anybody ever seen this before? I have no idea how long it's been like this, probably as long as I've had the bike. I've put a lot of miles on it, and it never complained...
I found the little piece in the oil pan.
What could cause such a thing? Seems pretty catastrophic, and I'd expect equally grave results elsewhere in the engine, but everything else looks good so far...

Yep. I've seen it.
When I opened up the engine on my '78 KZ1000, I saw the same thing. From what I've read elsewhere, it is a fairly common sight on some models with about 40K miles.

Were either of you running a manual adjuster?

Don't know about the 750 (still haven't cracked the motor on mine, yet...but I fully expect to find what you have:) ), but every KZ1000A motor I have cracked has those guides virtually worn to nubs...and this is on some bikes with low mileage (<25,000 miles)...I suspect is is a function of age, wear, heat, and long-term exposure to petroleum products. And some of those bikes with those 'nubs' were still running.
