Hello fellow KZ RIDERS:

I just had a tune up on my KZ650B (1978).

I had the valves adjusted and shortly after my Tachometer failed.

Does anyone know how to troubleshoot this problem. Clymer says that you have to remove the tach pinion when removing the exhaust cam (which was done by the service technician) to service the valves.

Anyways it worked for about 10 - 15 miles after getting the bike back and then the tach failed. (Now sits at 0RPM)

I am dissapointed, because I really like to wind the bike out and used the tach quite a bit. The bike really kicks into life after 5000 RPM and now I am afaraid that my riding style will be comprimised as a result of losing the tach.

Any ideas would help.

RIDE SAFE SO YOU CAN RIDE AGAIN TOMMOROW.

Check to make sure both ends of the tach cable are screwed in and tight.
If they are screwed in, remove the end from the tach. Start the engine and you should see the cable spin.
If it does not spin, undo the engine end of the cable and start the engine, you should see the little nub spinning.

That should help narrow it down.

Check to make sure the tech reinstalled and tightened the tach holder washer thingy. If he didn't, the tach drive will pop out enough for it to stop working. You will notice it right away as there most likely be oil oozing out.
Personally, after checking the cable and looking at the end while running (as previously mentioned), I would pull the tach drive out and inspect it. Make sure the gear is not chewed up. If it is, let me know as I have one that you can have.
By the way, there is plenty of experience here that you will soon gain enough knowledge to do most everything on your own, and you won't need to waste your money on techs that just got out of school. They don't know these bikes like we do, and most likely never will.
So search past threads and the database here, and you will most likely find whatever you need. If not, then ask as there are many here that have been there, done that, and know what they are talking about...So...Welcome:)

Ok,
Remove the holding screw and holder. There is a seal and seal ring that will come with the drive(don't lose these).
The housing will come out with a little persuasion, but be patient as there is an o-ring midway that is holding it in place. Once that is removed, the gear is then accessable. The gear might come out with the housing, or it might not.
If it doesn't, turn it counter-clockwise and it should the come out. This really should be done with the head/valve cover removed so that you can visibly see the process, but it doesn't have to be. Having the cover removed allows you to loosen the cam to ease this process, plus it helps you learn more of the workings of the DOHC process.
Hope this helps..
If you need to directly chat with someone, just click on "PM" button, and you can send a direct message to that user.
One other thing, go to your profile and update to show what you have and where you are.
It saves a lot of time of having to explain what your ride is when you have questions..and also there might be a member close to you that can assist with problems.
We like pics here...B)

It's pretty rough to not install the drive correctly. If it's not falling off the front of the engine gushing oil out of the vacant hole it's on there correctly.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
