possible cam chain noise? was created by mpatrick19
well after a few long months i finally rode my bike down the street. it bogs down really bad around 3000 rpms but you can push through it with some finesse. When i got back to my house i was hearing a tapping/knocking noise from the top end, i took the cam cover off and spun the motor over by hand I noticed that the cam chain had a hop to it every revolution or so. I have an automatic adjuster so i dont guess i can do anything about that anyway. If its not the tensioner what else could it be? chain? cams? valves? I think i am in for another few months of it being down again.
thanks, mike.

I don't know what you mean by a hop in your cam chain, but I do know that the automatic cam chain tensioners on many older Kawasaki's don't work well. I ended up replacing mine with a manual type from Z-1 enterprises. Mine is a 1979 650...but your bike info is unknown.
You should put your motorcycle and location info in your signature line so everyone will know what year and model bike you have. That way anyone with experience on your model can assist you.

sorry about that. the bike is a 1982 kz750n1. when i say hop i mean that the chain jumps a certain spot on the rotation of the motor. it doesnt jump the teeth on the cam gears or anything but just sort of jumps up in between the cams, kinding like its binding and then frees itself. I have looked in the manual i have and it really is no help, any other suggestions of what to check would be greatly apperciated.

thanks, mike.

u may want to check out the tensioner? automatic does not meen it does not need adjusting .it will adjust to the proper tention automaticaly when u release the looking bolt and nut. it may not be holding tight? alowing the chain to go slack at will? set it up as per the manual. a kz can be stripped so only the spring is working.and the spring is not meant to hold the chain back under load.also the chain could have a badly stretched area. u cannot drive the bike like this without doing serious damage. u could hit a piston with a valve or worse.it that a septor or gpz? i see they both use the same tensioner.
