I put some sealer on mine. Once it's torqued down just wipe away the excess.

The factory manual specifically says to use sealant on the end plugs. I think the stuff you mention is very good. I would assemble "wet" and torque the cover lightly, wipe away excess, let stand for a couple of hours. Then do the final torque. You don't want to leave excess rubber sealer in the joint around the part, just enough to seal it tight and hold it in place.

what sort of "sealer" are you talking about? Do I need to buy "special" stuff? And BTW why do the old ones go bad? Or how do they go bad? Mine are seeping oil.

They go bad because they are coming up on being 30 years old and exposed to tons of heating and cooling. I'm surprised any of them last as long as they do.

PMC make some billet alloy ones that are black so do not look much different from rubber originals and they are much better.

From what I hear, the 3-bond type products are very good. I would buy some except the only local source is the dealer and he sells it for $30/tube. Not a misprint, I did type $30. The only downside of 3-bond may be that the machanics tell me 3-bond is for permanently sealing cases and cover assemblies so I don't know how hard it would be to take apart later.

I used the black ultra hi-temp RTV on mine and it is very good. Stays pliable, easy to take apart later.

On my 750, the rubber end plugs act as camshaft "bumpers" for end play in their movement. I wonder if putting metal plugs in would be OK?

They may appear to be bumpers, but if you look at the cam caps, they are what hold the cam from moving side to side. If the billet ones seal they will work fine. I think chances of leaks are worse with the billet than rubber myself. I use Yamabond #4 on the cam end plugs which is the same as 3 bond from what I understand. Get it at your Yamaha dealer. Won't be no $30 hopefully.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

I know what you mean, but the metal inserts on the inside of my plugs definitely show metal wear marks from the camshaft ends. I think those camshafts banging into solid plugs isn't as good as the rubber half moons. They have a molded lip that centers them in the ehad and makes them stay put from side thrust.

That's where I priced it for $30. They are just a bunch of thieves. I know I can order it off the net, but ordering a $6 tube of sealer and paying another $8 for shipping bugs me. I found that the ultra hi-temp black RTV product is very good, had no problems. maybe not as good as 3-bond, but pretty good.
