exhaust question

19 Mar 2008 23:44

I am thinking about coating the inside of my exhaust to help keep the blueing effect from happening. The question I have is how hot does the pipes get? The reason I ask is I was considering buying the brake caliber high temp paint (500 degree) in a quart can. I thought if I clean the inside of the pipes with a wire brush pretty good and then pour some of the paint down in there and work it around I could get a pretty good coat. Someone give me some input on this.

Also I have almost finished the bike. I will be posting pictures soon. My dad says its a night and day difference. I say its over 400 man hours difference.

cheers

The header paint I used to spray the OUTSIDE of the headers on mine was rated at about 1000F as I recall. I don't think 500F is good enough, especially for the inside of the pipe which is getting the full blast of hot exhaust.

I honestly don't think any paint or coating is going to live on the inside of the pipe, just my opinion. I also don't think it will stop the bluing. The pipes that don't blue have a double wall construction with an air gap which keeps the outer pipe significantly cooler and prevents the bluing.

Rustoleum makes a 1200 degree barbeque grill spray paint, that should do it.

I saw a modern Triumph Bonneville with just 3K on the clock This past Monday, both pipes were blued nearly to the foot pegs. Sortta had that, I wish the Govm't'd leave me alone type of look.
