exhaust collar question was created by riverroad
Can someone tell me if the header pipes on KZ1000's are the same sizes as on KZ650 or 750's?
Having a hard time finding split collars for my header. I have this annoying little exhaust leak on #4, and I think it's because I didn't pay any attention to which collars went where last time I had the header off.
They're six bucks apiece at the stealership.

I am under the impression ALL the collars are the same size for a set of headers.

I had a different header that took shorter collars than stock, but they were all the same size.

That's what I thought as I pulled the header off and the split collars fell off Mario. But when I started looking at them, some were a little shorter than others.
I was just wondering if the exhaust port sizes were similar between 650's and 1000's. I kinda doubt it, but I had to ask.

Exhause pipes are larger diameter on the KZ1000 so I think the collars would be different

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

Thanks Ron, I figured that, but I wasn't quite sure.
Seems like I see more of them things for 650's than I do for 1000's on Ebay.

I was told recently (by Gringo I believe) that 750 split collars are shorter than 650's.

Not sure if this helps you.

A 650 is smaller than a 1000, because 1000 is more than 650.
With gas at 3.35 a gallon, what's the small cost of the correct collars going to dent your budget???

Gee, you're smart Roy. I never woulda thought 1000 would be bigger than 650. But as I live in a manufacturing world, I was thinking maybe, just maybe, Kawasaki might've kept their costs down by a little known phenomena called "uniformity of parts" between models. But as I've found out now (which is why I asked), that isn't the case in this instance.
And at 6 bucks per stamping, that's 48 bucks for eight little pieces of stamped sheet metal, which is ridiculous. Considering what they are, they should be more like 50 cents apiece. Compare that with your average .99 cent spark plug, which is a lot harder to manufacture than a curved piece of sheetmetal, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that I'm getting shafted by the dealer.
I might fork out the 48 bucks, or I might go ahead and make a stamp and die so I can make my own.

I have to agree with riverroad on this one, 6 bucks each seems high. When I installed my ZR7 exhaust I needed to get the shorter 750 type inserts. I was originally going to cut the 650's down but as luck would have it someone here needed a set for a 650 so I just sold him mine and ordered new ones from Kawasaki. IIRC they only cost like $2.97 each. At that price it was worth it to me to know I would still have all my digits when I was done. :P
