Cam install / timing was created by 2bskor
I finally got the head on new gaskets etc overcame the timing chain / cams alignment problems....I thought. I have the crank mark at TDC right on the T the cams are aligned there is 28 pins between the two cams. I put the centre sprocket on tighten it all is ok. I have reset the tensioner and as soon as I put it in and take out the bolt wham the crank is now not on the T. It is off the T. do I have the chain on wrong is there too much slack in the front and not in the back by the tensioner ??

Also when resetting the tensioner before you put in the engine should the short bolt go back in, maybe the tensioner is extending too far ??

I came a very long way to get to this point and I'm determined to see it till the end !!!!!!!!

Any help would be great

Umm, we´re talking about your KZ1000 ST, right? Your signature info was probably lost when Stein moved the site, I know I had to reenter mine.

Anyway, I take it the T mark moves clockwise - if the crank rotates when you release the tensioner plunger and the cams don´t, yeah, I´d say you have too much slack in front.(I´m surprised that the tensioner can rotate the crank, but I´d be even more surprised if it could rotate the cams too.)

I´d redo the cam install making sure the chain is taut at the front when you install the exhaust cam - also check that it is on the front idler gear properly, still assuming we´re talking about a KZ 1000.

I think I have it right now. I had wrench on the crank and and a wrench on my front cam and there was no slack the chain was tight. I then proceeded to count the 28 teeth and put the chain on the back cam as it explains in my clymer.

I put the tensioner in and voila the crank is on the T the cams are lined up, well the front one is not perfect but if you move it one tooth it is too far and where it is is just a tad higher on the front cam back line mark that I would like but I have reinstalled the cams, chains three times this is the closest I have gotten. I rotated the crank a few revolutions and everything seemed fine. I am afaraid as hell to start it:(

All this to stop a frigin oil leak.

And ya it is my kz1000st, man I don't like this new site!!

Yeah, I know that feeling. :S Looks good to me, and if you could rotate the engine without anything catching up you´re probably good to go - the most important thing is the correct amount of teeth between cams. Have to admit that I don´t have that much experience with the 1000s though, so you might want to wait starting her up until someone more qualified than I has chimed in.

Btw, we could never post multiple pics here, the only way to do that is to have them on another site and linking to them.
