Points v/s Dyna Electronic Conversion was created by mikemac01
I have a 77 kz750 and am doing a major tune up. Is it worth the 125 bucks for the electronic upgrade or stick with the old points. If I go with the conversion what will I gain. Thanks

Hi Mike,
Go with the Dyna. I've always had good performance out of my KZ900, up to about 7500RPM. Above there and it's all sputter and miss. If I fiddle with the points I can get to really run but the points seem to fall off fairly quickly.

I've replaced the points with Dyna S electronic ignitions on my two 650's and they seem to be easier starting and idle smoother than with the points. Once set the electronic pickup will be maintenance free unless it ever fails.

Both have pros and cons. I've kept the points ignition on my '77 KZ650C1 and it runs very well. However, they do begin to pit at around 4,000 miles or so. This doesn't create a rough running situation or anything noticable, but when I put in new points I can notice a bit more pep. I end up changing them about every 5,000 miles along with the condenser. I don't mind; it gives me something to tinker with, and I can get them cheap (ahead of time) on eBay. I guess the electronic ignition would pay for itself after about 30,000 miles, and I assume it would not degrade with mileage as the points do, but if it ever breaks it would probably leave you stranded. Points don't seem to present that risk. Ed

The Dyna S also works well with the Accel coil kit.

After installing the Dyna S, I couldn't believe how faster it started! Before with choke on, hit the starter button and it would crank about 3-4 seconds before lighting off. Now, it lights off in about 1 second. I was so impressed I showed my wife over and over again. She just rolled her eyes and said "that's nice dear" It starts easier, idles smoother and accelerates smoother.

How hard is this conversion to do and set up. I also see most guys went with the coils also. I see it will work with the stock ones what is the difference. I am also having trouble posting a picture how is it done on this site, Thanks
