Stock valve shim sizes for SR650? was created by davenkids2001
Ok Comrades...
I have read all the info I could find about doing the valve lash adjustment on my SR650. Many thanks to all you knowledgeable folks for all the info and directions on how to do this adjustment, but I have a question:
Does anyone know what are the STOCK shim sizes for the 1979 SR650? I have reason to believe that my bike is still stock (bought from the original owner with 6000 miles and NO indication this adjustment had ever been made). Last year I checked the clearances and found the exhaust valves at about ~.018 and the intake valves with nearly zero clearance, which follows what is typically stated on this board. I know that to adjust all valves to ~.012, I need to decrease the exhaust valve clearance about ~.006 and increase the intake valve clearance about ~.012.
I would like to order these shims in advance of starting the work but without knowing the stock shim sizes I can't calculate the correct replacement shims.
I realize that this can be a complex, delicate and time-consuming task to replace under-bucket shims, so any info and hints would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
-Dave

Not sure if there is a stock shim size, as they would have had their clearance checked and the appropriate shim added for each valve.

You need to measure all the clearances, list them for each valve and position (Cyl, 1~4), then when you remove a shim and and check the number on them, or measure, you can order the right size you need to achieve the clearance you need.

There's no way to know what is in there without removing them. They were around the 270 area from the factory usually.

321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.

The onlw way to get a set shim size would be to know what the valve stem height shoud have been from the factory and that will vary.
If you were to mesasure the height of the valve prior to any work being done and put them back then you would get the same shim size
