Gpz750 Turbo gears?
08 Mar 2008 15:58
Just wondering about using 750 Turbo tranny gears in an attempt to get my cruise rpm down. I have heard that just the 5th gear is geared higher. Any truth to this and would it swap in to my 650 crankcase? I know the 550 gear set wont because of my kickstarter.

KZ750
1st 2.333
2nd 1.631
3rd 1.272
4th 1.040
5th .875
GPz750 Turbo
1st 2.285
2nd 1.647
3rd 1.272
4th 1.045
5th .833
You'll have to decide whether the change is worth it, but I don't think it will work anyway because of the kickstarter.
I haven't tried to put a 750 trans in a 650, but I have installed the 550 six speed trans in GPz750's, and I am fairly certain that if the 550 six speed won't fit, neither will the 750 five speed (including Turbo). The 550 six speed takes the same amount of space as the 750, and fits in exactly the same way.
My $0.02 anyway.
Oh yeah, with stock gearing about the slowest the Turbo will go in first gear is about 15-20 mph, gets real interesting riding anywhere you need to go slow, like in front of WalMart

Sadly the 750 turbo transmission uses different size shafts and bearings to the standard 750 (and 550 for that matter).
I was going to do the 550 swap on my turbo until a few measurements scuppered all that.

I am about to do the same to my 1978 KZ650 after I get my KZ1000 Z1R back together. The answer to your dreams is a 1985 Ninja 600a model. All you need to do is shave the clutch basket a bit so the nut can fit and drop in the transmission. I have seen this done to a KZ650 at a dealer in Vancouver Canada.

Hey JudgeMental do you have the gear ratios for the ninja. Is that A 6 speed also? I ask because im looking too put a 6 speed into my 77 kz650. what is the difference between the ninja and the kz550? I am not worried about the kick starter at all, all of the components will be removed. along with the starter and those gears, and the starter clutch. I am not sure if that is going too work but I will find out soon enough. I am setting up a race bike so i will not need any of those parts any ways. Thanks, Let me know and keep me informed about how your project is going thanks Scott

how do you plan on starting the bike? Bump starts can be a pain if everything is not in perfect tune... and pushing the bike up hill every day to pop start it could also be not so fun...

Hmm, might give it a try. I never used my kickstarter anyways...

Well I got a trans from a ZX600r coming.
cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...em&item=260170653325
Gear ratio's are:
1st 2.571
2nd 1.777
3rd 1.380
4th 1.125
5th 0.961
6th 0.851
With the lower 1st and 2nd gears I will be able to gear it up with sprockets and keep the same aceleration while bringing my cruise rpm down and top speed up.

Ok, so this is the same ratio as the 550 gears. I guess if this works you guys will have found another source for a 6spd trans.
