MAC 4-1

Was running it with no baffle. Sounded absolutely awesome, but, it was a little too loud.

Bought a new baffle from Mac. Now it sounds like a salad shooter. Yuck. Phewey. PFFFFTTTTTTT.

Seems like I saw a post where someone said you could drill holes in the baffle to get better sound. Is that correct? if so, where do you drill them?

If not, is there another solution?

know exactly what you are talking about. The header made my bike quieter than my previous stock exhaust with just a few holes drilled in it. First, I took the baffle and removed the sound deadening cloth-like material completely. Then in equal distances drilled 5 holes around the baffle. This gave the bike a nice rumble. I keep the baffle in for normal riding, and when I want it to sound really mean I just remove the baffle completely!

My baffle doesn't have any sound deadening material.

Yep, you can drill out the backing plate on most baffles. Start with a couple holes 180 degrees apart of about 1/2". Then test. Then add a couple more. Repeat until happy!

I hate to look so dumb, but, I'm not sure I'm following you on the "backing plate". My baffle is one piece. It looks like the internals of a car muffler; a chambered design.

I'm assuming you mean the very back of the baffle; the part visible when it's inserted in the muffler?

Yep, the back of the baffle. When you are looking at the rear of the muffler part, from the back of the bike, drill some 1/2 inch holes around the center hole, where the exhaust comes out. I did three holes in mine, equally spaced, and it sounds about right to me.......chris3

Did you have to contact MAC directly to buy the new baffle? I'm currently running no baffle on my 77 650 and have kicked this idea around for awhile of getting ahold of another baffle for it.
What part number did you have to order? Or did you just tell them what you had and what you needed and they figured out the rest?

I ordered the one off their website. When I didn't get it after several weeks, I called, and learned the order had not processed, and it was the wrong one, anyway. They sent me the correct one, which was cheaper than what the website showed, as well; around 25 bucks.

It's a beautiful part; powder coated, snugh fit, and VERY quiet.
