Starter Clutch

Anyone ever replaced the springs and rollers for a started clutch in a 81 kz550. Any tips tricks. My main question is do you really have to split the case to do this job.

03/28
Today i started on this job and now have the starter clutch removed with the engine still in the bike and without spliting the case. It actually was a bit easier than i expected although on reinstall there is one this im concerned about. I took a bunch of picture to do a write up on it. But im not going to waste my time unless someone wants it. So if there is anyone that would be helped by a write up on "How to Remove a starter clutch through the oil pan". Let me know id be more than happy to do it if itll help someone out.

I have the same problem and have been told that you do not have to split the case. I haven't tried it yet but they say you can pull the oil pan and side cover, then slide the shaft out of the clutch and wiggle the clutch out of the chain. Sounds simple but they also suggest that you have a lot of patience.

Thankyou. Has anyone actually done this by taking off the oil pan. Id rather have someone that i can fall back on and ask questions before i start blindly. I reallly would rather not have to split the case.

I know next to nothing about the 550s, so I don´t know how similar they are to the 650 engines, but I have done it a couple of times on KZ650s, both times through the oil pan without splitting the cases - Nate (NONB ) has even done it with the engine still in the frame.

I have a writeup on the procedure (for the 650/750 fours) in the filebase, but I can´t seem to access or download it - I´ll see if I can attach it here for you to check out.

Edit: Nope, pdf file won´t attach - shoot me a pm with your email and I can send you the file.

Edit 2: Filebase seems to be working again, here´s the writeup: CLICK
77 KZ 650 B1, 82 GPz 1100 B2.

I need to do this on my daily rider KZ750H (the one with over 100,000 miles). I would enjoy seeing a full picture writeup to add to the prior write-up on this site. Lots of close-up pictures would be nice, plus all of the tips you can think of.

Thanks!

Check Bo's (OnkelB's) post above. I believe N0NB's been there also. I've got a 550 starter clutch in front of me, it's just not near the top of the list.
