I have this bike all the way apart. I was having trouble with the starter kicking out. I had the starter checked and the guy said it was ok. Now that I have the engine apart the starter clutch looks ok also. Any help on what to look for.

What do you mean by "I was having trouble with the starter kicking out".
If you mean that when you were using it, it would stop turning the engine over, that is normal. If the engine isn't in good tune and fires a couple times as the starter is working, the engine will spin faster than the starter is turning it and the starter clutch with be over ridden.
Simply put, the engine over runs the starter clutch and it releases. You may have just needed ignition and carb work to fix the proablem.

I am not clear as to what the problem is specifically either. Does it engage then kick out prematurely, or does it not initially kick out when it should?

Maybe it could be an electrical problem if the starter is intermittent, or if it sticks on and does not disengage.

Tough to tell just yet.

In reference to the starter problem. When I push the starter button it will engage but then spins out of engagement is the best way I can explain it. The engine has not fired yet. It will work for instance if I killed it and then hit the starter right away sometimes it will fire back up. Hope this helps as I do not want to put this thing back together and have the same problem. Starts with the kick starter.

The slots in the one-way where the rollers wedge against the hub on the secondary shaft don't have to wear much, maybe a few thousandths for it to slip. I replaced one last year and it was barely visible where it was worn.

The symptom was a screeching sound when the starter was engaged. Repeated presses of the starter button may result in engagement that would release after a couple of turns of the crankshaft. Even with all the plugs out it would slip on occasion.

If the one-way "assembly" part number is ordered, it comes with rollers, pins, springs, and the one-way. given that the one-way seems to be of softer metal than the rollers, it's the most likely part to be worn.
