welded crank
23 Feb 2008 10:22
Hi, I am currently working on a kz 1000. The plan with it is to make it in to a street/strip bike. Right now I have it completely apart ,and i was wondering where exactly do you weld the crank at? and who can do this, could i take it to the local welding shop or not? Another question, would it be a good idea to have it indexed as long as i have it apart? if so who could do this?
Thanks alot

id take it to a shop that has some experiance with motorcycle engines ,im guessig they would be little more carefull than the guy who welds mufflers on the corer;) run a blank drill rod through small end of all 4 rods to make sure its straightB)

That would be a 17mm drill rod, available from lot's of place for less than $20 for a 36" piece.

they weld where each cheak meets the journal pins.it is common for the kz1000 cranks to be out of true. the z1's were better. no point buying a drill rod ,the shop will have 1 and they will check it anyway.if u have V blocks and a dial indicator u can check for runnout to see if it is bent(less than .002") and bearing play (less than .002"),also rod ,pin end wear ,and big end side play. may save money, before u ship a bad crank.

Another question, do you just weld the outside one or all of them. Do you have to disassemble the crank?
I found this www.oldkawman.com/okndcranks.html
but it only shows the outside one welded.

After you are sure it is not out of index, weld about 1/2 inch where every wheel meets a pin. It takes a very small tourch to get into some of them.
