Clutch Adjustment

21 Feb 2008 17:14

I installed a new motion pro clutch cable a couple weeks ago. It seems fine, except its a little harder to pull in that it used to be, and if I put the bike in gear, hold the clutch it an push, theres a little drag and its harder to roll than if I had it in neutral. I looked in the manual and it says theres an adjustment on the arm that spirals out to push the pushrod in. I've never adjusted or changed that, so I don't see how it could be off.. I have the cable ran correct and have it tightened as tight as it oughta be.

You should adjust the clutch release mechanism (CRM)(the lower one behind the small plate on the sprocket cover) when you change a cable.
It will be harder to push than when in neutral. That's normal. But if the CRM was not adjusted properly, this could cause it to be even harder to push.

Alright I will try that tomorrow, thanks rstnick. Oh also the clutch seems like it disengages later in the handle motion. Like, it used to be I could let it off less than half way and start gettin power, but now all thats at the very end when I almost completely let off of the handle.

The new cable will be a different length than the old one due to stretch or even different manufacturers, so the lever feel/positions will change. Adjusting the CRM will fix that.

There's varying opinions on whether you should adjust the clutch release under the cover. My personal recommendation is don't unless someone else has fooled with it. I've never yet found it necessary to adjust. Even the 160,000+ KZ650 engine I retired a few years ago never had the cover off or the clutch fooled with in any way. (All original plates and springs). Probably 10 clutch cables replaced. Use only Kawasaki cables.
321,000 miles on KZ's that I can remember. Not going to see any more.
