Bead blast with 80 grit glass bead. You had best coat the surface quickly to avoid re-rust.

I don't know how to classify what is bad. it is a 78 model that spent 27 years in nj on the coast, so more salt corrosion than anything else. I will try some of the suggestions here.

Hey, You can't go wrong with regular old chrome polish as a first step. Next step is chrome polish with fine steel wool. If that doesn't work get some of that emery screen that plumbers use to clean pipe before soldering and begin the prep for painting.
