78 Exhaust Systems
15 Feb 2008 11:21
Does anyone know what brand or model exhaust I can use to upgrade my stock 4 - 1 exhaust to a 4 - 2 on my 78 kz650? I love the 4 - 2 look.
Thanks

I think you need to back up a bit here, in 78 there was no 650 that came with a four into one exhaust so whatever is on your bike now is aftermarket. There are stock systems out there but to find one in really good shape is both difficult and expensive.

Does it run well? That 4-1 is definitely not original. If it runs good, that means thje bike has been jetted to that pipe.
FYI, in general: going from a 4-1 to a 4-2 is not really an "upgrade". A properly designed 4-1 will actually run better than a 4-2, as odd as that sounds.
If you really want a 4-2 you might look at the MAC website. I have seen their 4-2 systems on ebay. I don't recommend them (there are much better pipes available) but they are 4-2.

Thanks fellas. I was told that the 4-1 would have a slight avantage but I just love the look of two smoking barrels sticking out the back. I will make sure to take the jetting in2 consideration. I just rejetted once for the pod upgrades. Thanks for the MAC refrence but I really hate the way the MAC 4-2 pipes flare out. Any other 4-2 aftermarket brannds someone was fortunate to try and work? Does Kerker or V&H have any pipes that worked for someone's 78 650?

I understand what your saying but Kerker, V&H, etc pretty much all make 4/1's. Mac does make the 4/2 but other companies make "universal" slip on's also. Just keep on searching the net and ebay and you'll find something.

Thanx for all the feedback. Been searching the net and it seems that only MAC has a 4-2. I hate to spend 300 then have to turn right around and spend a few more hundred for slip ons but it seems like I am being backed into that corner. I hate the flared pipes so I guess my taste is going to hurt my pockets on this one. Thanks fellas. Lemme know if u come across anything!

As I couldn't sleep last night just laying in bed thinkin bout my bike .. I decided to get up and give searching one more try, and what do you know, it payed off. For all of you looking, MAC carries all the pipes and mufflers you are looking for. The have 4-1 and 4-2 pipes that both allow you to retain the center stand and the also carry 3 models of mufflers. Flared, Megaphone & Tappered. MAC's run around 300.00 from the dealer but u can find them through distributors and on-line for around 250.00. They mufflers are gonna cost you 100.00 to 180.00 depending on where u find them. Hope this helps some of you who's pipes looked as bad & rusted as mine! Go to MAC's on-line catalog for part numbers.

There's a currency converter at the bottom left side of the site. I clicked on US Dollar and it shows $780.17. Not cheap, but it may be the closest thing to stock out there. However, shipping may cost $12,000. Ed

 $780 +s&h from EU ... daaayum! I have to admit, that is a bad azz set of pipes! I am going to do some searching to see if anyone has imported any of these pipes. If I find a dealer I will let you all know. Great find 650ed!
