1986 P5 questions was created by kayzednutcase
Hi Guys,
I have a couple of questions that i hope can be answered. I have just bought an engine from a 1986 KZ1000 P5 Police bike. It was sold as a 1981 but the motor VIN is KZT00JE049573, that makes it an '86 not '81 correct? Also, why is the power output for the '86 80hp and not 102hp as per the earlier 1000's ?
I have a frame that is for a '82 KZ1000 LTD, will this motor/ frame combo work?

I really appreciate the time spent answering these questions.
Bryan

I could be wrong but I believe they de-tuned the 1000P's for longevity and reliability.

Why do i always buy the bikes that are different? The earlier 1000P's seem to have higher hp ratings but i have to be special and have an '86. I also have a '77 Honda 750F that seems to be a bastard child for getting parts. One day i'll learn to research and think before buying...maybe not, why change a lifetimes habit??

Everything I have read stated that the Police bikes from 82 on used the 92 hp KZ1000M/K CSR/LTD 998cc motor, not the 102 hp 998 cc KZ1000J Standard motor.. Same basic motor, just different cams/carbs.

81 Police bike used the earlier 1015 cc motor.

I suspect that at one point they lowered the peak hp rating and increased the lower end torque, but I haven't read anything to verify that.

It just seems like a big difference to go down on power by 20%. Why is it popular to put a J engine head on an earlier KZ? Is it valve size and do you keep the original KZ cams? If that is the case, can earlier KZ cams work better in a J?
Thanks

There are two basic engine types... the 903/1015 early and later 998 J type. The J type engine is about the same in either version and the 20hp you seem depressed about really isn't there... I doubt there is a lick of difference between the engines and I also doubt any of them ever made 100hp from the factory. I would say 75hp for either type engine from the factory at the rear wheel would be about right. Horsepower ratings for most any of the earlier 70s-80s bikes are mostly just marketing hype.

Mixing and matching parts between the earlier style engines and later is kind of expensive... The J head can be used for its larger valves but you run into other issues. You can also use a Suz GS1100 head as well for its bigger valves with the same sort of problems. I seem to remember KZ owners using the GS heads back in the 80s... anyway, if the J engine doesn't have enough power, go look at the APE website as they will be happy to help you out. Just takes money.
