'81 KZ1000 CSR cam question was created by HookedOnKawi
Hey all! I just got myself an '81 KZ1000-M1 (CSR) a week ago. I can't leave well enough alone and found these cams from Orient Express.

www.orientexpress.com/Kawasaki/Standard/KZ+1000/Camshafts/

Do they apply to the CSR? If not, who carries cams for this model? Thanks!

Any of the 900-1100 KZ cams will fit, you just need the appropriate cam chain sprockets (available from APE).

The J cams would be a cheap upgrade, the 83-84 GPz1100 cams would be a better upgrade, then you have a bunch of aftermarket choices.

The CSR has a mechanical tach so it has the tach drive gear on the exhaust cam, the J and K (Standard and LTD) have a electronic tach (as does the GPz1100) so no tach drive gear.

Is anything after '80 considered the "J" model engine (998), and if so, will any aftermarket part for the "J" model engine fit my CSR? Thanks again, Steell.

The CSR has a "J" engine. All 1000's from 81 on have this engine. So any parts for a J engine should fit yours.

Correction--ALMOST any part. As was mentioned above, not all "J"s come with tachgear-equipped cams.

One more exception, the 81 KZ1000P cop bike used the 1015 motor, the Cop Bikes switched to the 998 J motor (actually a CSR motor) in 82. The Cop bikes used the J motor from 81 all the way up through 2005, keeping that motor in production for 25 years, something of a record for a Japanese bike motor I think.

APE has a good explanation of the differences on their website.
