Wrapping does look cool on older bikes like ours.
One bad thing is the metal can become brittle. If you dont leave an area open to allow cooling, then the metal can get hotter than normal from being insulated by the wrap.
I have not done this myself and am still thinking about doing this.
Good luck.

Sorry I don't know anything about wrapping pipes, just helping you out with a pic. You can PM him (Scumbag) and ask. He also has a very fine project going on in the project forum. Click the link below to check it out (more wrapped pipes also)

I asked scumbag about the header wrap he used in that thread that Bluemeanie mentioned (see page 3). He said he used around 35 feet. I never asked him about sealer though.
I'll be wrapping mine this winter as well because my original header is rusted a bit and looks like crap. Thought I would wrap it until I bought a new exhaust. Never realized you could get a sealer though.

If the headers aren't badly dented you could also spruce up their appearance with a ceramic header coating like this one:

I've been thinking of wrapping as well, as the last paint job I did lasted 2~3 years using a high heat paint, not the BBQ paint.
How does one apply this Black Satin Header Coating mentioned in oldcoldankles post above?

I read on the back of the wrap of one inch , It takes 33 inches to do one foot of 1 1/2 pipe , I guess you use clamps or tie wire to hold it in place ?

I bought a Thermo-Tec kit from eBay. It came with the paint that you lay down first (and last), the fiberglass wrap, and the stainless tie straps for the ends.
The kit I got was the one with the 1"x50' wrap. I like the tighter look of the 1", but it looks like scumbag used the 2". I imagine the 2" would be a heck of a lot less work, but then I only have two pipes, so its a trade-off... For my twin, it takes almost EXACTLY the whole roll of the 50' to do the two header pipes.
Make SURE you follow the directions! And it is incredibly messy putting it on. You have to get it moist. Then you get, black flecks of paint everywhere, and fiberglass. Ick. Then it smokes like its on fire for two days... and continues to mildly smell for the rest of the season....
I'm going to do it on a couple of my other bikes, too....
Here's how it looks:
