Do I need a Oil Cooler?
22 Dec 2007 06:58
Just wanted to get Members advice before I started collecting the parts. This will be for a 1105cc with 29mm carbs and Kerker. Whats the thinking on a Cooler and Thermostate setup, needed or not. Lockhart or OldKawman type setup. Ebay or where? Thanks

I like oil coolers, but then being in Houston, the weather is warmer and it just makes sense to me to try and keep it cool as possible

i dont think you can ever go wrong with using an oil cooler. especially when one of the benefits of a cooler is a cooler engine and pro longed engine life.

Where is a good place to get a thermostat for a system already on a bike. I've seen them on bikes but never knew where to get one if it didn't come in a kit witht he cooler.
1980 LTD (changed over the years), 1979 LTD (being rebuilt), 1977 KZ turbo and various KZ's in various states of build. KLX110

Lockhart has offered them (chrome or gloss black) for 20+ years IIRC, possibly longer.
Lockhart Oil Cooler Thermostats
I've seen other thermostat brands out there specifically designed (per their listing) for motorcycles, I just can't recall who offers them or how effective they are compared to the Lockhart thermostats.

anything not stock needs a cooler, especially if you abuse it and its warm out.
thermostats? like a no bleed off valve or something?
where can i find a bigger oil cooler, my 1100gpz one seems a tad small.

What CR are you planning on running? If its relatively low, like 10.25:1 then I don't believe its necessary. And with 1105cc you should still have air passages between your cylinder since you'll be running a stock block. If you get into higher CR's and live in a warmer climate then you'll most likely need one. You also don't want to cool the oil too much as that can also hurt your motor in the long run.
