Helicoil is the trade name for a thread repairing product that consists of a coil insert. You buy a special tap which is a tool that cuts new thread in a larger hole and then you insert the Helicoil into this threaded hole. The internal helicoil thread will be the same size / pitch as the original thread. The downside of helicoil thread repair is that the coil only uses an anaerobic adhesive (similar to Red Loctite) to hold it in place and if you tighten a bolt or sparkplug in a Helicoil insert, the insert can come out with the bolt or sparkplug when either is removed. There are other insert types that have mechanical locks that will hold them in place better than a Helicoil and these inserts, like a Timesert, are more expensive as well. Do a google search on "thread insert" or "thread repair". You will find at least a half dozen alternatives. I use Recoil inserts in my carb repair business to fix thread that is damaged on bowl and carb top threaded holes. It works well as a permanent repair for stripped threads. Keyserts are also another reputable type of insert and NAPA sells its own inserts. I use these for spark plug hole thread repair as they are inexpensive and come in a variety of depths and sizes. The NAPA inserts are ONE piece solid inserts and are retained with Red Loctite and stay in place pretty well. Professionals mostly use Timeserts and Timeserts are generally considered the Cadillac of inserts (also very pricey).

WG-

Would use timesert for spark plugs. Well worth the extra bucks.

There is a loctite product for 'permanent lock'. Machinist buddy has some. MSC.com has it but not the autoparts store. I'll try to post pn next time I'm up at the shop. He says they used with military aircraft components at one of his previous employers.
