I am assuming that i will need to rejet after my build is done. kz750, 810, gpz head/cams.
Was wondering if anyone has tried the dynojet kits? Did you have very good luck? A friend of mine tried the dynojet kit and ended up putting different carbs on because the ones with the dynojet kit ran like crap. He had k&n pods, and a 4 into 1. His bike only ran good wide open. At stop signs gas would pour out of his carbs, and riding in town was not easy. Was there something he just didn't do right?

I think that Wired will get in on this, but my shopping is done, so I have time.

I think you said it right the first time: Jet kits work, but only if the carbs are good and the kit is done right.

Case and point: My GPZ ran like a raped ape, but I have a friend that works carbs like Wired does, and had me bring in a set that I picked up on ebay or somewhere. I just wanted to see what was done and what the difference would be. How bad could a running set of carbs be?

See, I pulled my carbs off the raped ape and they looked worse that the set I got on ebay.

For the next two hours or so we polished, used special homemade tools, and worked the carbs all over. And what I suspected was true: just a quick jet job is a disaster on a 20+year old bike.

And now my raped ape is ALOT smoother, and starts alot faster.

Don't waste your money on a "jet" kit. They comprise of extra jets and needles with instructions. what you are paying for really are the instructions in the kit. It's cheaper to go to the junk yard and buy jets then dial your bike in.

I really suggest getting a complete jet kit!!
Especially if you have newer CV carbs that have nonadjustable needles (thanks E.P.A.) The modified taper of the new needles is different than stock, and adjustable grooves are the key to tunning for midrange and throttle response...
BUT if your carbs have adjustable needles all you need to do is swap the main jets and change the needle setting to get the balance right. older carbs are very tunable.

I agree, I put a d/j stage 3 in my 750. After many ajustments with needle hight, finly got it tuned. And I have good response and top end now.

I had a stage kit in my 1000 and it ran great. That was with the stock carbs and I have since gone to 34mm and now 29 smoothbores. I got a new set for $50 on ebay about 4 years ago. Came with a free dyno run coupon. As mentiond above you carbs nees to be in very good shape, clean and tuned correctly. Just throwing some bigger jets at a bike will only hurt things unless it is done correctly.

the jet kits from back inthe 80s were trash. i ordered a DJ kit and never even installed it.. The needles that it came with were EXACTLY the same as my stock needles, and the jet sizes.. well DJ uses their own jet sizing.. so try and borrow jets from someone at the race track.. well they all have K or Mikuni jets not DJ jets. Plus all the slide drilling and crap..

i got my bike running smoother and better top end by just changing the mains and putting in/removing the airfilter if the temperature changes. and YES I RACE WITH AN AIRBOX.
