Oil filter cup was created by jimmybon
I have a dilemma with my zrx1200
I have a genuine Kwaka manual that shows in the exploded view the oil filter metal cup ((they call it a fence) that sits around the oil filter)), on the top of the filter.
It just so happens that I'v been involved with Z650/750s for 30 years and that the cup sits under the filter in all that type of engine up to zr750 02 and it's exactly the same filter and set up
I smell a rat
can anyone confirm if the the genuine manual is wrong, or duz it even matter
cheers

The "fence" keeps any larger stuff away from the filter so as not to clog it up. Can you scan that diagram so we can see it. Does not make sense?

Good question jimmybon and one that has stumped all the experts here so far. My KZ550 sits under the filter but the manual and parts diagrams clearly show it on top of the filter for my KZ1000. My 1000 manual also shows a man installing it on top and the text states to remove the fence from the top of the filter for that bike.

this is the scan of the manual, the diagram shows it on top and the picture shows it on the bottom
So it really matter?

That's an interesting dilemma. On the 550's and 650's I've worked on, the cup was on the bottom. And to throw more questions into it, the KZ400 uses the same oil filter setup, but it has no cup at all (at least the few I worked on didn't).

ok, seems like we need some engineering to work this out.

The cup "looks good" sitting under the filter
but,

If there was no cup used, then the oil would perhapes flow from the entrance hole in the oil filter chamber and though convection, flow mainly through the top half of the filter and through the top hole in the filter bolt. Put that one down to the "on top" argument.

If the cup was on top of the filter then it would deflect the oil toward the lower end of the filter and through convection, travel though the filter from the lower surface to the higher suface using more filter area, and then throgh the top hole in the bolt. hence better filtering and longer filter life.

The filter is also fitted with a bolt that has a ball and spring valve in the middle of it, oil also will travel under the filter into the bottom hole and back through the second hole into the filter chamber, but if the filter becomes clogged then the oil would flow UNDER the filter though the bottom hole and then through the valve (under pressure) up through the centre of the bolt directly into the engine. It appears to me that the cup would obstruct the space under the filter for this to happen.

It seems to add up to "ON TOP"

I understand everything above, but.... everyone here has it on the bottom and the scan shows the man holding it on the bottom. Call your local Kaw store and see what they say. I would put it on the bottom! (My
