I had my advancer out to grease it up an noticed that not only do the wieghts not rest on the shaft, but are significantly different distances from the shaft is this correct or do I need new springs?

The weights aren't supposed to rest on the shaft, where's the rest of it?

The weights rest on the base of the cam eccentric (the piece that seems to be missing in your pic) not the shaft.

Best way to tell if you need new springs is to put it back together then put a timing light on it, then see what the rpm is when it reaches full advance (easier with two people). If it reaches full advance earlier than what the specs in the FSM call for, then you need new springs.

Those springs look alot newer than the rest of the part. A good lubing should solve your problem.....chris3
