While I'm in there...

So, as seen in my other thread, I have my '77 1000 motor completely torn apart right now trying to find a mystery noise. What I want to know is, if there is anything I should do while I have the cases split. I will be removing and blocking of the kick starter.

Would consider a new cam chain and any other cam chain related parts not otherwise replaceable without splitting the cases. :)

If your planning on keeping the motor pretty close to stock you could leave it alone. But if down the road you think you might get bored with it, you could have the crank done and put in some heavy duty studs and have the tranny back cut. That way you won't have to do a tear down again. All of those things should run about $500 but will give you piece of mind and make for quick and easy upgrades later on. If you don't think you will be going fopr bigger power, you should at least have the tranny done and of course a new cam chain.

As you are rapidly discovering,
While I'm in there...
is the most expensive phrase in this hobby :)

It can turn a simple valve lash adjustment on a 1000 into building a 1500cc fire breathing monster :D

And devour your bank account in the process :woohoo:

Yeah, put in a new cam chain. Also, replace your starter clutch rollers and springs. Install new valve oil seals and at least lap your valves to check that the seats are good.......chris3

Don't even ask me how much I have into my 615 big bore kit. While waiting for the machine work to be done last year, I've replaced all the wheel, steering, and rear suspension bearings, and then bought another parts bike. I'm now teetering on rebuilding the complete bottom end, or installing everything I've bought in a 12,000 mile short block. Why not? Almost everything else is new on my '85 GPz550. Where do I sign up for the 12 Step Program?

yeah, where do I sign up for the 12 step? The cam chain is new, I am lapping in the vavles, and installing new seals. If I knew that it was going to run once I put it back together (which I don't, see this thread ) I would be all about throwing cash and trick parts at it, having it powder coated, and some many other things. But, I just can't justify too many extras until I know it runs right. :(
