Engine Swap -1981 CSR 1000 motor into 73-80 Frame
01 Nov 2007 15:00
New to form - I posted in the newbie forum already with this basic question. I know double posts are a bad thing but i know the new guy intos don't get as much reads.
Here is the deal:
I have a '70's Amen chopper frame built for '70's 900/1000's.
I have a line on a 1981 CSR that I am looking at in a couple of days. My research indicates that my aftermarket frame was built in the 70's. I have learned that the '81 csr motor was changed a lot and that it will not be a straight drop-in.
Has anybody here swapped a "J" motor into a 73-80 frame or vice-versa. Please ignore that it is an aftermarket frame that I am dealing with.
Hope to hear from someone that has this knowledge.

does that amen chopper frame happen to have airbrush artwork all over it and one of the murals happens to be of a cow?

Welcome. Yes there are some people who have swapped to the later J-model engines here. Try using the search function and you'll be able to find all the answer I can't give you since I've never done it.

Thx for some responses.
I have been through search for hours and have not found anything yet.
I even emailed oldmankaw and got a decent responce even though he has never done it. His major concern was if there was enough room for the valve/cam covers. Did not know that was so different, so I have learned some valuable info so far.
The frame has never been used. No mural on the frame, let alone "factory" primer left. Would think a frame would have pretty small mural,no?
BTW, the CSR that I am hopefully picking up tomorrow has been yakked about here on the forum. It was on Craigslist and then ebay with bad bidder. Its up in
Cut and Shoot.
Yeah, thats a real name of a real town here in Texas.
AND, I might not go this route if the CSR is in good shape to leave complete in stock condition for me or somebody else. I have no plans of using more than the motor in any case. Maybe the whole front end depending on bearing availability for Honda/Kawi swap.
I recognize rarity, desireability and value. I do have a very nice Honda 750 Sandcast!

Go take a look at the Dragbike.com forums. I definitely know its been discussed before on there but I couldn't find it. There was a guy that even made mounts so he could switch back and forth between early and late model Kz engines. He showed some good pics.
Good luck.

BIG THANKS Doug. Took me just a few minutes too find the post including pics of what he did. Way more than I can do at this time.
BUT, my Amen frame has some advantages that he did not with the early frame. It has removable rear mounts and 1 forward mount on the frame. Might just have to do 1 more forward mount. There is hope yet.
Here is a link if anybody cares.

Thanks Mike. I'm assumeing that you mean KZrider's classified.
I'll get this darn link'ing system figured out yet! Might take a few more edits unless someone offers to help.

Hey Mike, If you would not mind, I would like to see the foto. I looked at the ad and said "self, don't get carried away here". I kind of wish that I knew a bit more about the differences in the motors before I commited to the CSR. But, who knows maybe I'll have a couple of the green teams version of the UJM to add to the collection. Should be picking it up tomorrow.
