sunnen portable hones

:huh: does anybody know if these portable sunnnen
hones could also be used to bore cylinders. If so could they be used to bore 900 to 1015 and still stay within tolorences.

It's time, not tolerance. It's gonna take forever. Hone is for finish work.

with a hone it would take forever. get it bored first...save yourself alot of headaches.

0.005" removal per minute is not fast enough for you?

Yes and yes.
Might take you 15 minutes of actual honing time (plus set up) per cylinder though.

What kind of stones are they using to get this rate with the
portable? I didn't see any specs in the link. Will look some more. I could really use one of these if they cut that fast.

OK found it. 'fast material removal up to 5 thou/min'
I'm kind of skeptical. When you spread it over the whole bore it's a lot of material.

4mmx4 is a lot of Boring much less honing, thats .157" per hole at .006" per stroke thats a little over 26 strokes on a boring bar, per hole.

No you can't. We have done .020" on our power stroker hone on some Harley® cylinders, using 100 grit stones to remove most of it, but it was a lot of work.

It is only $95.00 to have it done. The hone cost way more than that.

youd have to do a lot of cylinders at $95.00 to pay for that little jewel,you also have to learn to use it.who wants to be the first to try it on their cylinder?even in my electrical,hvac,plumbing business there are certain things we sub out just because of liability and the hassles involved with certain jobs that you spend a lot of time and money teaching someone how to do,then it turns into an expensive doorstop!(been there ,done that!bwaha)goodluck,happy wrenching!

With 3 or 4 extra 750 four blocks and the same number of 750 twin blocks plus 2 or 3 extra motors for each I think I can afford to experiment.

And I hate having to pay someone else to do something.

I wouldn't worry even if you only had one block. The tolerance is the easy part if you measure often.

The 0.005"/minute is the rate of material removed by the tool.
The reference surface is the area of the stones face.
It's not the rate of bore diameter increase.

Take the face area of the stone and divide it by the area you want to remove material from. Multiply this by your 0.005" min
and you will have the best rate of diameter increase you can expect.

For example:
If hone has 4 x 2" x 1/2" stones that's 4sq inch.
If bore is 3" x 8" that's 72sq inch.
Ratio is 1/18
0.005"/min translates to "up to" 0.007mm/min radius increase.
I wouldn't want to do this with a hand held tool.

Another thing to consider is stone cost....you'll use a lot of them.

I would agree with jay, for the most part, it can be done if youy have a bunch of time, you would get a better round hole if it was bored. one thing you are going to have to consider, HEAT, to remove that much you are going to put a lot oh heat in the jug, this will cause out of round problems, you are going ot have to do it slow and let them cool off often to keep them round
