Slipping clutches will normally show up in a higher gear, under full throttle passing, or whenever under load.
Amazing how long the stock clutches last. This is a good reason to use motorcycle-specific oil, but we're not going bring up THAT topic.

clutch slip but how the clutch engages. With
the tire/engine combo I have you have to be
able the feed the clutch in gradualy over the
first 10-15 yards, keeping the tach right at
5 grand to get the perfect hole shot.If the
clutch grabs to soon it will spin, bog. or want
to flip over. The Barnett plates grab and chatter
and the cheap ones slip and then slip all the time
after a couple of launches.Stock plates and HD
springs have been the best setup.I have been using
them since 1978,so I guess I am used to them. Most
stock bike clutches feel a little wimpy to me.I
have had several brands of springs.Apes are not
the stiffest, but have held up well.

Yeah, it helps to have things clean. If the friction disks fall within specs and it's slipping, you should at least replace the springs (in addition to sanding). They're cheap and may be all that is needed. Sanding the plates to take the glaze off will help the release and you'll get less of a "clunk" when going into first from neutral.I was talking to some dude about my mildy slipping clutch, and he said you could just lap the steels on some eighty grit emory cloth and get good results.
Anybody here tried that?
I use 400 grit just to take the shine off. 80-grit seems a little rough, but I haven't tried it.
Also, stack the clean plates. If any don't lay flat in the stack, replace it. Same goes for the friction disks.
