1980 Kz1000 Shaft ,Valve gaskets Leak a bit
21 Oct 2007 23:44
Just purchased a 1980kz1000st and all four valve covers have seapage at the base. The seapage doesn't amount to much, but it is noticeable. Is this something I should get repaired asap? If so should I have the valves adjusted as well? What should I expect to pay roughly? The bike has 11,000 miles on it and supposedly was gone through thoroughly 3years ago. The owner claimed to have ridden 3,000miles this summer alone. I also am wanting to change the oil. I think the manual suggests SAE 10w 40 is this accurate or dated? Thanks for the help feel free to give me any other advice aswell if you have the time. The bike will be ridden in southern indiana if that makes a difference in oil suggestions.

If your talking about the half circle looking things,(end plugs) they are easy to change. You will need a cam cover gasket. You should invest in a manual and do the work yourself. You will save a ton of money and get to know your bike. It's an easy procedure and Jeff at z1enterprises.com has all the parts. And yes 10-40 will work.

Be sure the oil doesn't have the friction reducers in it which is what is in standard motor oil. These oils will cause your clutch to slip possibly. If you're not sure search past posts here as there are several posts about what to use and not use. You can find the proper oil anywhere really, I use Rotella-T but use whatever you'd like.

Evansville, Indiana. I did a little research I think my bike is a E1 shaft. It looks like the one in your caption. So you suggest the Rotella T SAE 15w-40.
