Sat for a week?
19 Oct 2007 00:39
So my 77' 650 sat for about a week, because I lost the key and had to buy a new ignition switch. Now when I try to start it up, she wont turn over. I checked the sparkplugs, they are BLACK. Also, it has rained, and I have breathers on my carbs
for the most part I put a cover over er' but thats what I've got.
No blown fuses, fuel is fine, everythings connected, but there were two white wires on ignition hookup, i dont know if it matters which one you plug in or the other, but everything turns on and the relay clicks on, so I assume its all hooked up correctly.
What could be my problem? It was JUST running VERY well before this.

I am going to assume that you checked the battery, you may have a drain in the bike and it has dicharged the battery,
Also, you should be able to try to kick start the bike,

You said it 'won't turn over', but then mentioned about plugs and air filters. Does the engine spin when you press the start button with the ignition on? If not, this should be addressed first.

I tried kickstarting it, no go. The engine spins and tries to start, just doesnt.
I havent cecked the battery. I'll see if thats the problem. But shouldnt it kickstart even if it had no batt?

It shouldn't start on a dead battery and on a weak battery run real rough.

So I got some carb spray, removed my breathers, and spray off and on while trying to start, it rumbles a bit like it is wanting to run, but seems like it exhausts the carb spray. I found that the fuel filter was clogged and put a straight line from the petcock to the rail, still nothing. I charged my battery to full, maybe it is that the spark plugs are fouled? Or maybe I wired the ignition wrong? But I dont get it, everything turns on
if it were wrong, wouldnt it all stay off?

do you have fire to the plugs, if you do then are the plugs wet with fuel

A little off topic, I had a 74 MG Midget convertible (laugh if you want, but that car had every girl in my senior year in the passenger seat at one time or another) that fouled all four plugs, overnite, after running the best it ever had the night before.
No joke.
No joke.

im telling you... machines have personalities like everything else. it's why two identical bikes can be so vastly different.
